Meaning
Standardized manufacturing validation protocols in the automotive industry establish that a supplier has understood all design and specification requirements. The collection of documents known as ppap demonstrates that the production process can consistently manufacture compliant parts at the required run rate. This framework is applied to all new or modified components used in electric vehicles.
Process Verification
Validation of the production line begins with a production trial run of a specified number of parts, often three hundred consecutive units. Engineers evaluate the capability of the machinery, the quality of the raw materials, and the stability of the processes during this trial. The results show if the manufacturing process can run smoothly without generating excessive defects.
This step must be completed before the supplier is approved for high-volume delivery.
Document Pack
Documentation for the process involves eighteen elements that must be completed and submitted to the buyer. These include process flow diagrams, failure mode effects analyses, and control plans. Measurements from the first production samples must prove that all dimensions are within tolerance.
The supplier must also submit evidence of material test results and calibration certificates for their measurement instruments.
Procurement Sourcing
Automotive procurement managers use ppap approval as a gate before releasing full payment or starting mass production. If a supplier fails to submit the required documentation, the launch of the vehicle platform can be delayed, resulting in significant fines. Sourcing teams require sub-component vendors to submit their own validation packages to ensure that quality is maintained throughout the supply chain.
This structured approach ensures that any manufacturing issues are identified and resolved before parts arrive at the final assembly line. Once approved, the supplier cannot change their production process, location, or raw materials without submitting a new validation request.
