Meaning
Chemical transition from a liquid to a semi-solid state occurs before a resin system reaches its intended destination. The onset of premature gelation makes a material impossible to pump or spread during the manufacturing process. This event is usually triggered by temperature spikes or incorrect catalyst ratios.
Viscosity Rise
Molecular weight increases rapidly as the polymer chains begin to crosslink into a three-dimensional network. When premature gelation begins, the fluid loses its ability to wet the surface of the battery cells. The material becomes a rubbery mass that clogs the dispensing equipment.
Flow Restriction
Partial curing inside the supply lines creates blockages that disrupt the production cycle. Because premature gelation alters the rheology of the adhesive, the beads produced are often irregular and incomplete. This leads to gaps in the thermal or structural interface.
Pot Life
Material stability is measured by the time it remains workable at a given ambient temperature. Controlling the storage conditions is the primary way to prevent premature gelation in the factory. Once the gel point is reached, the material cannot be returned to a liquid state.
This boundary is especially narrow for fast-curing two-part systems where the exothermic reaction of the mix can accelerate the hardening process beyond the control of the application hardware.
