Meaning
Rectangular metal or polymer casing houses the internal jelly roll or stacked electrodes of a battery unit to maintain structural integrity and internal compression. A prismatic cell enclosure serves as the primary barrier against atmospheric moisture and electrolyte leakage while providing a flat surface for heat dissipation during discharge cycles. Its geometry facilitates tight packing density within a module, as parallel sides allow for uniform force distribution across individual units.
Thermal Management
Cooling efficiency depends heavily upon the thermal conductivity of the container material and its physical contact with heat sinks or cold plates. Aluminum alloys feature commonly in this application because they combine low mass with high heat transfer rates. Friction stir welding often seals these units to ensure a hermetic barrier that prevents ingress of oxygen or humidity that degrades lithium-ion chemistry.
Pressure Regulation
Internal gas accumulation results from electrolyte decomposition under high voltage or thermal abuse conditions. Manufacturers integrate a score line or vent disk into the top surface of the shell to provide a path for controlled rupture before the entire assembly experiences catastrophic deformation. This mechanism directs energy away from adjacent components to prevent a thermal propagation event within the pack.
Mechanical Constraint
Swelling of electrode materials during lithiation creates significant lateral force on the walls of the hardware. The shell structure resists this expansion to keep the internal separators from shifting or folding, as sustained contact pressure ensures consistent ion transport across the electrochemical interface. Dimensional stability under these loads dictates the cycle life of the finished product.
