Meaning
Material directionality property defines the mechanical behavior and fracture resistance of a rolled or forged metal plate measured along its thinnest dimension, perpendicular to the rolling plane. Short transverse toughness represents this property, quantifying the resistance of a thick alloy section to crack propagation along its thickness direction. This parameter is critical for assessing materials used in heavy structural plates, marine vessels, and high-strength aerospace forgings where multi-axial loads are applied.
It is typically lower than the toughness measured in the longitudinal or long-transverse directions due to the alignment of grain boundaries and non-metallic inclusions during rolling.
Testing Procedure
Standardized fracture toughness or Charpy impact tests are conducted on specimens machined so that the crack propagates parallel to the rolling plane. Specimen preparation is highly challenging for thin plates, meaning the test is primarily specified for thick sections where the short transverse direction is large enough to allow for accurate sampling. The test results are expressed as critical stress intensity factor values, representing the material’s ability to resist delamination or lamellar tearing.
Design Influence
Sourcing engineers use this parameter to design joints that avoid lamellar tearing, a failure mode where the material splits along the aligned grains under through-thickness tensile stresses. This design approach is essential for heavy welded structures where weld shrinkage forces act directly in the short transverse direction. Selecting materials with certified toughness in this direction ensures the structural integrity of complex welded assemblies.
Sourcing Strategy
Sourcing contracts should specify the minimum toughness required in the short transverse direction for all heavy plates and forgings. Sourcing from mills that utilize advanced refining techniques, such as calcium treatment for inclusion shape control, ensures high toughness by reducing the harmful effects of elongated sulfide stringers. Procurement specifications must require ultrasonic testing to verify that the raw material is free from internal laminations and defects.
