Meaning
Physical measurements of the change in total thickness of a battery cell assembly provide a direct observation of internal material expansion and contraction. Monitoring stack displacement during a charge cycle reveals the extent to which lithium intercalation or plating increases the volume of the active layers. This measurement is required for designing the mechanical constraints and thermal management systems of a battery pack.
Measurement Accuracy
High-resolution sensors detect shifts in the micrometer range to capture the subtle breathing of the cell. Errors in these readings arise from thermal expansion of the measurement rig or the compressibility of the sensor mount itself.
Volume Expansion
The thickness of the stack increases as ions move into the host material of the anode or plate as metal on the current collector. Measuring this expansion helps in predicting the internal stresses that could damage the separator or crack the solid electrolyte.
Housing Design
Engineers use the observed change in stack height to determine the necessary spring constants for the module assembly. Rigid housings must accommodate the maximum displacement without exceeding the safety limits of the structural bolts and the end plates. If the housing is too stiff, the resulting pressure could cause a mechanical failure of the cell components during a fast charge.
