Meaning
A physical characteristic defines the bulk density of a granular electrode powder after a container has been tapped under specified mechanical conditions. Optimizing the tap density anode parameter is essential for achieving the required electrode thickness and active material loading in commercial battery cells.
Mechanical Test
Evaluating this property involves placing a weighed sample of anode powder into a graduated cylinder mounted on a specialized tapping apparatus. The cylinder is raised and dropped from a standardized height at a set frequency for a specified number of taps, typically three thousand. After the volume of the compacted powder stabilizes, the tap density is calculated by dividing the sample mass by the final volume.
Coating Output
Materials with a high value for this parameter pack together tightly, requiring less solvent during slurry preparation. This enables the manufacturer to produce high-density electrode coatings with excellent electrical contact between the particles. It also allows for higher volumetric energy density in the final lithium-ion or sodium-ion cell.
Sourcing Limit
This bulk metric does not measure the individual particle density or the crystalline structure of the graphite. It is a secondary property that is highly dependent on the particle size distribution and surface treatment of the powder.
