Meaning
Safety systems prevent the operation of equipment or the flow of current when internal sensors detect temperatures exceeding safe operating limits. Integrating a thermal interlock into a battery pack ensures that the contactors open immediately if a cell temperature spike is detected. This protection serves as a final hardware or software barrier against thermal runaway.
The system remains locked in a safe state until the temperature returns to a normal range or a manual reset is performed.
Thermal Monitoring
Thermistors placed throughout the pack provide continuous temperature data to the monitoring electronics. When the system detects a value above the threshold, the thermal interlock triggers an interruption of the power circuit.
Hardware Redundancy
Dual pathways for the signal ensure that the safety function works even if one part of the control system fails. The presence of a thermal interlock is a requirement for high voltage systems where the consequences of a heat related failure are severe.
Protection Logic
Logic circuits ensure that a thermal interlock isolates the energy source from the load or the charger to stop the generation of additional heat. In an electric vehicle, the mechanism might disable the fast charging process while still allowing low power cooling fans to operate. This action prevents the accumulation of energy that could lead to a fire while protecting the integrity of the cells.
The design of the circuit is often verified through rigorous testing to ensure it reacts within milliseconds of a detected fault. Maintaining this separation is a fundamental requirement for achieving international safety certifications for energy storage systems.
