Meaning
Manufacturing equipment applies controlled heat and pressure to seal thermoplastic materials. In battery production, a thermal jaw press is used to create the hermetic borders of pouch-type lithium-ion cells. This machine utilizes heated metal blocks to melt and bond the laminate layers together.
Pressure Distribution
Uniform force across the entire length of the jaw is necessary to prevent localized thin spots or unsealed gaps. Sourcing engineers specify the mechanical design of the jaw guide to ensure parallel contact during the sealing stroke. This parallel action guarantees that the polymer flows evenly to fill any microscopic surface roughness.
Temperature Regulation
Heaters embedded within the metal blocks maintain a constant temperature to achieve a reliable melt. Temperature sensors provide feedback to the control system to prevent overheating, which can degrade the adhesive polymer. Consistent thermal management ensures that each cell on the line undergoes identical bonding conditions.
Dwell Control
Controlling the contact time is the final variable in securing a high-quality pouch seam. The thermal jaw press must hold the material under pressure for a precise duration to allow polymer chain interdiffusion. If the jaw opens too quickly, the seal will fail due to incomplete bonding at the interface.
This timing is finely tuned to maximize production throughput while ensuring that every cell passes subsequent leak testing protocols.
