Meaning
Active thermal management technique that uses the Peltier effect to create a temperature difference across a semiconductor junction. Thermoelectric cooling moves heat away from sensitive components without the use of moving parts or refrigerants. The direction of heat flow is reversible by simply switching the polarity of the applied current.
Heat Flux
Efficiency is determined by the Seebeck coefficient and the electrical conductivity of the materials used. In a typical module, multiple ceramic plates sandwich the semiconductor pellets to provide a flat contact surface. While thermoelectric cooling is less efficient than vapor compression, it offers a compact solution for localized cooling.
Precision Control
Temperature stability is achieved through fine adjustments to the input power. Because the cooling effect is proportional to the current, a battery management system can maintain a cell at a specific set point with high accuracy. This level of control is useful in laboratory testing where consistent thermal conditions are required for valid data.
Precision cooling allows for the simulation of extreme environments without the lag associated with fluid based systems.
Reliability Benefit
Reliability is high because the system contains no compressors or fans that can wear out. This makes thermoelectric cooling suitable for remote or high vibration environments where maintenance is difficult. The absence of liquid coolants also removes the risk of leaks and electrical shorts within the battery enclosure.
