Meaning
The relationship between input raw material costs and the final mass of usable product determines the commercial viability of a manufacturing process. In the battery industry, yield economics for hard carbon production are heavily influenced by the mass loss during the carbonization of organic precursors. A process that loses eighty percent of its initial weight requires five tons of raw material to produce one ton of finished anode.
The calculation ends at the point where the product is packaged for sale and any further losses are considered logistics waste.
Conversion Efficiency
Improving the amount of carbon retained from the starting material is a major focus for process engineers. High yield economics are achieved by selecting precursors with high natural carbon content and optimizing the heating ramp to minimize the release of carbonaceous gases. If the conversion efficiency is low the price of the finished battery must be increased to cover the cost of the wasted raw material.
This metric is the primary driver for the adoption of new synthetic resins over traditional agricultural waste.
Cost Sensitivity
Small changes in the price of the raw feedstock can have a large impact on the total production cost when the yield is low. Because biomass is often cheap, the yield economics of natural precursors can still be favorable despite high mass loss. However, the cost of disposing of the volatiles and the energy needed to heat the excess material must also be factored into the equation.
A detailed sensitivity analysis helps manufacturers decide when to switch to a more expensive but higher yielding precursor.
Production Scale
Scaling up a laboratory process to an industrial level requires a deep understanding of the mass balance. Successful yield economics at scale rely on the ability to capture and reuse byproducts to offset the cost of the primary reaction. If a plant can sell the excess heat or the pyrolytic oils it improves the financial health of the entire operation.
This holistic view of the production stream is what separates profitable battery material suppliers from those that cannot compete on price.
