Meaning
Quality assurance procedures verify the integrity of hermetic seals in lithium-ion cells to prevent electrolyte evaporation and moisture ingress. During high-throughput manufacturing, battery micro-leak testing checks for microscopic pathways in the weld lines of aluminum and copper casing. This non-destructive test employs tracer gases to locate leak rates that are too small to be observed by visual inspection or conventional pressure drop methods.
Helium Detection
Pressurized helium is introduced into the cell housing before final sealing, or the sealed cell is placed in a vacuum chamber to measure the rate of gas escape. The detection of helium atoms by a mass spectrometer indicates the presence of pathways as small as one micrometer. This approach allows factories to isolate defective cells within seconds, preventing them from reaching the module assembly stage.
Yield Impact
Cell manufacturers must balance the speed of leak detection against the sensitivity of the instrument to maintain a profitable production line. Implementing high-sensitivity leak tests reduces the risk of field failures and warranty claims caused by slow electrolyte dry-out. This test step protects the investment in raw materials by identifying defect patterns in the welding machines before large batches are completed.
Mechanical Boundary
The test cannot easily distinguish between a single distinct leak path and multiple smaller porous zones in the weld. It also assumes that the tracer gas remains uniformly mixed. For this reason, the method is combined with mechanical stress tests to ensure that the seals withstand the physical vibrations of use.
