Meaning
Thermodynamic cooling process involving the transfer of thermal energy from a solid surface to a moving fluid medium such as gas or liquid. Industrial systems rely on convective heat extraction to manage the internal temperature of battery packs during rapid charging and discharging cycles. This mechanism prevents the accumulation of heat that could lead to thermal runaway or accelerated degradation of the cell chemistry.
Fluid Dynamics
Efficiency of the energy transfer depends on the velocity and the turbulence of the cooling medium. When performing convective heat extraction, the rate of cooling is governed by the heat transfer coefficient of the specific fluid. Air systems are often simpler to implement but offer lower thermal conductivity compared to liquid glycol or dielectric oils.
Increasing the flow rate improves the removal of energy but also raises the parasitic power consumption of the cooling pumps.
Thermal Efficiency
Geometry of the cooling channels determines how much surface area is available for the exchange of energy. Optimization of convective heat extraction requires a design that maximizes contact between the cells and the fluid. Fins or microchannels are often integrated into the battery cold plate to increase the path length.
These features must be balanced against the pressure drop created within the system. A high pressure drop requires more robust hardware and increases the risk of leaks over the lifetime of the vehicle.
Operational Bound
Environmental conditions such as ambient temperature and altitude affect the performance of the thermal management system. Limits for convective heat extraction are reached when the fluid can no longer absorb energy faster than the cells produce it. In extreme heat, the temperature difference between the battery and the coolant narrows, which slows the transfer rate.
Sensors must monitor these variables to trigger power derating if the cooling capacity is exceeded. Maintaining the cells within a narrow temperature window ensures the longevity of the lithium ion chemistry. This control is a primary factor in the warranty period offered by manufacturers.
