Meaning
Serial communication architectures use sequential data routing where each device receives information from its predecessor and passes it to its successor. In multi-cell monitoring systems, daisy chain propagation governs the total time required for a command or measurement query to travel through the stack of connected integrated circuits. This sequence ensures that every cell controller is addressed in order, allowing the master controller to collect voltage and temperature data from the entire pack.
Communication Delay
Cumulative delay in a serial chain increases linearly with the number of devices in the network, as each node introduces a processing and retransmission interval. Understanding daisy chain propagation helps system designers set the watchdog timeouts and sample rates for the battery pack. If the propagation delay is too long, the system cannot respond to sudden overvoltage or thermal runaway events in a timely manner.
Packet Structure
Digital packets must contain header and trailer bytes that allow each node to recognize its position and verify data integrity before forwarding. Slower baud rates increase the signal transmission time, whereas higher rates make the daisy chain propagation more susceptible to electromagnetic interference. Frame check sequences and cyclic redundancy checks are appended to every packet to prevent corrupted commands from being propagated down the line.
Interface Design
Differential signaling and isolated physical layers are employed to maintain transmission speed across high-voltage gaps between nodes. These techniques minimize distortion and signal degradation as the packet moves through the daisy chain.
