Meaning
This rapid sealing technique utilizes a brief, high intensity pulse of electrical current through a resistive heating element to weld thermoplastic materials together. Typically employed in the hermetic sealing of pouch cells, impulse thermal welding delivers precise heat to the polymer coated laminate edges under controlled pressure. It allows for the rapid heating and cooling of the weld zone while the joint is still held under clamping force, ensuring a strong, stress free seal.
Sourcing managers evaluate the cycle time and seal strength of this process to optimize the throughput and reliability of the cell assembly line. If the weld parameters are incorrect, it leads to incomplete sealing or thermal damage to the adjacent materials.
Process Control
The welding cycle begins with the clamping of the laminate edges between two water cooled jaws that contain the heating element. A high current pulse is then passed through the element, which generates heat through electrical resistance and melts the thermoplastic layers. Once the heating pulse ends, the current is switched off, but the jaws remain closed to allow the weld to cool and solidify under pressure.
This cooling phase is critical for preventing the formation of voids and reducing internal stresses in the polymer joint. The entire process is controlled by automated feedback systems that monitor the temperature, pressure, and time of each weld.
Sealing Quality
This welding method provides a highly consistent and reliable seal that is resistant to the aggressive solvents of the electrolyte. The rapid heating and cooling cycles minimize the thermal exposure of the active cell materials and the laminate coatings. This reduces the risk of thermal degradation and ensures that the physical properties of the polymer layers are maintained.
Sourcing specifications define the minimum seal width, the tensile strength of the weld, and the maximum allowable variation across the seam. Proper optimization of the weld parameters prevents the occurrence of microcracks and leaks during the cell’s lifetime.
Equipment Acquisition
Sourcing agreements for these welding systems must specify the cooling efficiency, the response time of the heating element, and the precision of the pressure control. Procurement teams evaluate the durability of the heating strips and the ease of replacing the protective teflon tape that prevents the polymer from sticking to the jaws. The contracts often include performance guarantees based on the seal consistency and the system uptime during high volume production.
This careful procurement ensures that the assembly line can operate at high efficiency with minimal maintenance related downtime.
