Meaning
Electrochemical probe made from high-purity lithium metal allows researchers and test engineers to measure the individual potentials of the positive and negative electrodes within a battery cell during operation. This auxiliary component, known as a lithium reference electrode, provides a stable reference potential against which the working electrodes are measured. It helps isolate the specific sources of degradation and capacity loss during cycling.
Measurement Application
Standard two-electrode cell measurements only show the overall cell voltage, which obscures whether a failure occurs at the anode or the cathode. Inserting a third electrode of pure lithium allows the system to monitor the potential of each electrode independently, revealing if the anode potential drops low enough to trigger hazardous lithium plating. This data guides the optimization of fast-charging profiles by pinpointing the exact voltage limits.
Testing Quality
Sourcing departments specify cells with integrated reference terminals for testing in pilot lines to validate new active materials. This enables the purchase of raw materials that do not cause extreme voltage swings under high-current discharge. Results from these tests are used to evaluate the electrochemical stability of materials before making long-term supply commitments.
Assembly Limitation
Spacing restrictions and pressure distribution requirements make reference terminals difficult to integrate into standard commercial pouch or cylindrical cells. They are mostly restricted to custom three-electrode laboratory cells and diagnostic prototype runs.
