Meaning
Resilient elastic sheets positioned between individual cells in a multi unit assembly maintain structural integrity and uniform face pressure. A module compression pad functions as a shock absorber that compensates for the physical expansion and contraction of items within a common frame. It ensures that cells remain securely held in place against the cooling circuit even as their dimensions fluctuate during high power charge cycles.
This item is critical for evening out the force across large pouch or prismatic faces which prevents localized degradation from mechanical stress.
Material Properties
High performance silicone or specialized foam is chosen based on its ability to resist permanent deformation over fifteen years of use. When a module compression pad is specified, designers focus on the force deflection curve which shows how much the foam pushes back at different levels of crush. The pad must stay soft enough to allow the cell to expand safely at eighty percent state of charge.
However, it must stay firm enough at low states of charge to keep the cells from rattling or slipping. This balance prevents thermal decoupling between the cell and the heat exchanger located at the bottom of the stack.
Thermal Management
Besides mechanical support, these components often include flame retardant additives that slow the spread of heat between adjacent cells. If one cell experiences a failure, the module compression pad acts as a temporary barrier that provides seconds of delay for the safety system to activate. These materials are tested to ensure they do not catch fire or release toxic gases at high temperatures.
The thickness of the material is calculated to leave exactly enough room for the projected irreversible swell at end of life. Improperly calculated pads lead to endplates bowing outward or separators inside the cells being crushed by excessive force.
Integration Efficiency
Adhesive backings allow robots to place these pads during automated high speed module builds. When the module compression pad is applied consistently, it reduces the need for manual inspection of every cell gap. It fills the space created by manufacturing tolerances in the cells and the plastic frames.
This creates a monolithic block that is resistant to vehicle vibration and sudden impacts. Consistent stack height simplifies the task of welding terminal bars across the top of the cells because every terminal sits at a predictable level.
