Meaning
Battery management system control parameters define the voltage difference at which a cell begins to dissipate excess energy through a resistive circuit. Within a multi-cell pack, the passive cell balancing threshold determines when the balancing resistors are switched on to bypass current around the highest-voltage cells. This action prevents individual cells from overcharging while the rest of the series string continues to charge.
Control Strategy
Algorithmic triggers in the controller monitor the state of charge of each cell. The passive cell balancing threshold activates only during the final charging stages when cell voltages diverge. This bypass prevents premature termination of the charge cycle.
Thermal Effect
Heat generation within the battery module rises when balancing resistors are active because the bypassed electrical energy is converted entirely into thermal energy. Setting a low passive cell balancing threshold for extended periods can cause localized temperature increases inside the enclosure. This thermal stress requires thermal mitigation strategies or periodic balancing cycles when the pack is idle.
Consequently, managing the duration of the balancing process is necessary to avoid degrading adjacent cells.
Operational Boundary
Lower limits on the voltage delta must be maintained to prevent unnecessary continuous balancing that depletes stored energy during storage. If the passive cell balancing threshold is configured too tightly, minor noise in the voltage measurement circuits will trigger continuous resistor activation. This unwanted operation reduces the available capacity of the pack and accelerates self-discharge rates during periods of prolonged inactivity.
