Meaning
Mechanical configuration designed to measure the frequency response of soft-packaged lithium-ion batteries. A proper pouch cell impedance setup must apply uniform pressure to the cell surface while providing low-resistance electrical contact to the thin metal tabs. This arrangement ensures that the physical dimensions of the cell remain stable during testing.
The setup provides the bridge between the flexible cell and the rigid connectors of the test equipment. Consistency in this setup is required to produce repeatable results across different laboratory locations and different users.
Pressure Regulation
Pouch cells expand and contract during charge and discharge. A specialized pouch cell impedance setup uses calibrated springs or pneumatic plates to maintain a constant force on the electrode stack. This prevents the internal layers from shifting, which would otherwise cause fluctuations in the measured impedance.
Variations in pressure can change the contact resistance between the active material and the current collector.
Tab Connection
The aluminum and copper tabs of a pouch cell are fragile and easily damaged by heavy clamps. Within a pouch cell impedance setup, wide-surface area contacts are used to distribute the clamping force. This reduces the risk of tearing the foil while ensuring a high-quality electrical path for the four-probe measurement.
Poor tab contact is the most common source of noise in these tests.
Environmental Control
Impedance is highly sensitive to the temperature of the cell. Most pouch cell impedance setup designs are compact enough to fit inside a thermal chamber. This allows for measurements at various temperatures without moving the cell or disturbing the electrical connections.
Stable temperature is required for comparing data across different batches of cells.
