Meaning
Mechanical parameter measures the force required to separate the heat-sealed layers of a flexible battery pouch. For lithium-ion pouch cells, seal peel strength determines the ability of the enclosure to withstand internal pressures and external vibrations. High strength prevents the borders of the cell from bursting under thermal or chemical stress.
Process Control
Sealing temperature and mechanical pressure are the primary manufacturing variables that dictate the final weld quality. If the temperature is too low, the polymers do not interdiffuse sufficiently, resulting in a weak seal. Sourcing teams use these metrics to audit the assembly lines of their contract manufacturers.
Testing Standard
Tension testing machines pull standard strips of the sealed border to measure the resistance to peeling. The resulting force-displacement curves show the consistency of the heat seal across the entire length of the weld. Consistent values across the sample indicate a uniform temperature distribution during the manufacturing process.
Operational Safety
Failing to maintain the required force threshold can lead to sudden pouch openings during cell expansion. When a cell charges and discharges, the electrodes expand and contract, which exerts mechanical stress on the pouch seams. A high seal peel strength ensures that these cyclic volume changes do not cause the seams to unzip.
This prevention is especially critical in automotive applications where vibrations and shocks are continuous.
