Meaning
Web slitting precision defines the relative positioning and clearance of rotating cutting blades used to slit continuous electrode webs into narrower strips. Correct shear blade alignment prevents the formation of metal burrs, debris and edge cracking along the cut foil of the anode or cathode. This alignment is measured in micrometres and must be monitored continuously during high-speed slitting.
It does not apply to laser cutting systems which do not use mechanical blades.
Burr Formation
Misaligned blades create rough, jagged edges on the copper or aluminium current collector foils. When shear blade alignment is poor, the resulting metal burrs can pierce the separator during the winding process. This piercing leads to internal short circuits and cell failure.
Debris Control
Microscopic metal particles generated during a poorly aligned slitting run can settle on the active material surface. This contamination causes electrochemical instability and self-discharge in the assembled cells. Regular blade maintenance and alignment checks are necessary to minimize debris.
Maintenance Protocol
Tooling departments use precision spacers and optical alignment tools to set up the slitting head. Ensuring proper shear blade alignment increases the service life of the cutting blades and reduces the frequency of sharpening. This optimization lowers the total cost of cell manufacturing.
