Meaning
Chemical vapor release describes the migration of volatile siloxane molecules from polymeric materials into the surrounding environment when exposed to heat or low pressure. Controlling silicone outgassing is required for protecting sensitive electrical contacts and optical sensors within a battery enclosure. The process continues until all low molecular weight components have escaped from the material matrix.
Contamination Risk
Volatile compounds can deposit on cold surfaces and form an insulating layer. When silicone outgassing occurs near high voltage relays, the resulting film can cause arcing or poor electrical connectivity.
Surface Interaction
Adhesion between different components is often weakened by the presence of oily residues. Products prone to silicone outgassing are typically banned from paint shops and cleanroom environments. Testing involves measuring the total mass loss of a sample after heating it in a vacuum chamber for a set period.
Material Substitution
Non-silicone elastomers or low outgassing grades of polymers offer a safer alternative for sealed systems. Assessing the potential for silicone outgassing during the material selection phase prevents expensive failures in the field. Engineers specify bake-out procedures for components that must use silicone to remove volatiles before final assembly.
Strict limits on condensable materials ensure that the internal atmosphere of the battery pack remains clean over its entire service life.
