Meaning
Mechanical durability assessment simulates the repetitive motion and resonant frequencies encountered during transport to verify that internal connections remain secure. The t.3 vibration protocol subjects the battery to a sine wave sweep between seven and two hundred hertz over a period of three hours for each of the three primary axes. This rigorous shaking ensures that the tabs, wires and mounting hardware do not fatigue or break under the stress of a typical journey.
It is a mandatory requirement for the safe shipment of lithium cells and packs across all modes of transport.
Motion Simulation
Random and periodic movements in a truck or aircraft can cause components to rub against each other or vibrate at their natural frequency. The t.3 vibration test identifies these resonant points where the mechanical stress is highest. If the internal tabs that connect the electrodes to the terminals are brittle, they may snap during the procedure.
This would result in an open circuit or a hazardous intermittent connection.
Connection Reliability
Secure electrical paths must be maintained throughout the entire duration of the test to ensure the unit remains functional. A failure in the t.3 vibration assessment often appears as a drop in voltage or an increase in internal resistance. High quality batteries use reinforced welding and vibration dampening materials to survive these forces.
The test also checks that the external housing can withstand the constant rattling without loosening the fasteners or cracking the plastic.
Shipping Clearance
Completion of this mechanical stress test is a prerequisite for obtaining the necessary transport certifications. Shippers must be able to prove that their batteries will not fall apart or short circuit due to the motion of the vehicle. This safety standard protects the logistics network from the risks associated with mechanically unstable batteries.
It ensures that the product arrives at its destination in the same condition it left the factory. Reliability in this test is a key indicator of the overall build quality of the energy storage system.
