Meaning
Specialized insulating patch ensures a hermetic barrier around the metal terminals of a pouch cell. In battery assembly, the tab lead seal wraps around the copper or aluminum tabs to prevent short circuits and electrolyte leakage at the exit points. This component must bond perfectly to both the metal tab and the outer laminate film.
Material Composition
Thermoplastic polymers with polar functional groups are chosen to achieve dual adhesion to metal and polypropylene. The outer layer of the tab lead seal melts during heat sealing to bond with the inner layer of the pouch. This dual bonding mechanism creates a dense barrier that blocks both liquid egress and gas ingress.
Electrical Isolation
Preventing direct contact between the metal terminal and the aluminum foil layer of the pouch is critical to avoid corrosion. Sourcing teams specify the thickness and dielectric strength of the seal material to guarantee electrical isolation. If the seal fails, the metal-to-metal contact can lead to rapid electrochemical degradation.
Thermal Assembly
Delivering pressure and heat simultaneously melts the seal around the tab to fill any microscopic voids. Because the tab has a certain thickness, a step-like transition occurs where the laminate meets the metal terminal. This transition requires sufficient polymer flow during the sealing process to eliminate micro-channels.
Ensuring a full melt flow during this step prevents the formation of pathways that would allow the escape of volatile organic compounds. This localized heat application must be carefully controlled to avoid damaging the adjacent active battery materials.
