Meaning
Standardized United Nations regulation defines the safety requirements for electric powertrains and rechargeable energy storage systems of high-voltage passenger vehicles. By complying with UN ECE R100.03, manufacturers certify that their battery packs can survive a series of environmental and mechanical stresses. The document specifies both the test procedures and the documentation required for type approval.
Its jurisdiction covers all contracting parties of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
Test Regimen
Pack designs must undergo rigorous testing including vibration, thermal shock, mechanical impact, and short circuit resistance. The UN ECE R100.03 amendment specifically demands that the battery pack prevent thermal propagation from a single cell failure for at least five minutes. This time window is designated as the minimum safe evacuation period for vehicle occupants.
Voltage Isolation
Electrical safety measures must prevent passengers from encountering high voltage under normal operating conditions. The UN ECE R100.03 standard mandates continuous monitoring of the insulation resistance between the high-voltage bus and the chassis. An immediate warning must trigger if this resistance falls below the specified threshold.
Type Approval
Securing the official certificate is the final step before a manufacturer can legally sell a vehicle. This process requires the submission of all test data to a designated technical service. Without this approval, commercial launch is impossible.
