Meaning
Fluid dynamic metric quantifies the cubic meters of gas ejected per second when a battery safety valve opens. Determining the volumetric venting rate allows engineers to size exhaust ducts and fans to prevent the buildup of explosive atmospheres. Peak rates often occur within seconds of the initial vent rupture.
Flow Calculation
Calculations combine the internal pressure of the cell with the orifice size of the safety vent. Because the gas temperature is often very high, the volumetric venting rate must be adjusted for thermal expansion to ensure the exhaust system is not overwhelmed.
Internal Pressure
Rapid gas release creates a shock to the internal environment of the battery enclosure. High values of the volumetric venting rate necessitate the use of heavy duty latches and gaskets that can withstand the sudden increase in internal force without failing.
Containment Sizing
Designing a housing that can safely channel the gas to the outside requires knowing the maximum possible discharge. If the volumetric venting rate exceeds the capacity of the vent stack, the enclosure itself may rupture, leading to a more dangerous and uncontained fire. Pressure management remains the priority.
This requirement becomes a critical design constraint for installations in underground vaults or tightly packed shipping containers where natural ventilation is absent.
