Meaning
Standardized protocols for coating thickness determination use x-ray spectrometry to measure metallic layers on various bases without destroying the sample. The method described in astm b568 provides non-destructive thickness measurements of electroplated coatings on conductor surfaces. It operates by directing a primary x-ray beam at the test specimen and measuring the intensity of the secondary fluorescent radiation.
Measurement Mechanism
Fluorescent radiation arises when the primary beam ejects inner-shell electrons from the coating material. As outer-shell electrons fall into the vacancies, they emit x-ray photons with energies characteristic of the specific element. The instrument counts these photons per second to calculate thickness.
Software algorithms compare the count rate against calibration curves generated from reference standards of known thickness and composition. This calibration relies on having standards that match the density and alloy composition of the target layer. Variations in density can introduce measurement deviations because the intensity of fluorescent radiation depends on the mass per unit area.
Modern energy-dispersive systems utilize silicon drift detectors to achieve the high resolution needed to resolve overlapping spectral lines.
Operational Boundary
Critical limits of the method involve the saturation thickness of the coating element being tested. Beyond a specific depth, usually around ten to twenty micrometres for common metals, the primary beam cannot penetrate further and secondary emissions plateau. Errors occur if the substrate contains the same metal as the coating.
The test also requires a minimum surface area to ensure the beam falls entirely within the target zone.
Commercial Verification
Procurement contracts for high-reliability circuit boards and connectors mandate specific plating ranges to prevent premature wear. Compliance with astm b568 ensures that protective gold or nickel layers meet these requirements before assembly. Sourcing agents use these standardized measurements to verify that suppliers have not underplated components to save metal costs.
Buyers accept or reject batches based on the generated reports.
