Meaning
Fluctuating impedance across a physical junction occurs during the movement or compression of conductive surfaces. Measurements of dynamic contact resistance reveal the electrical quality of tab welds and busbar connections while the battery system experiences vibrations or thermal expansion. The value tracks the change in voltage drop across an interface under load and ceases to apply once the connection is permanently fused or completely severed.
Interface Stability
Mechanical vibrations during vehicle operation cause microscopic shifts in the alignment of terminal connectors. This dynamic contact resistance increases when the clamping force is insufficient to maintain metal to metal contact across the entire surface area. Oxidized layers on the terminals further exacerbate the rise in impedance.
Cycle Life
Repetitive expansion and contraction of the cell during charging cycles apply stress to the internal electrical paths. Monitoring dynamic contact resistance over thousands of cycles provides a metric for the degradation of the internal current collector bonds.
Heat Generation
Localized temperature spikes occur at points where electrical flow meets high resistance. Since dynamic contact resistance produces ohmic heating, a rise in this value can lead to thermal runaway if the heat exceeds the cooling capacity of the thermal management system. Durable interconnects minimize the risk of localized hot spots.
