Meaning
Specialized electrical connectors pass electrical currents through the wall of a sealed container without allowing any gas or moisture leakage. Using a hermetic feedthrough is a standard requirement for battery housing designs where sensitive internal chemistry must remain completely isolated from the environment.
Sealing Technology
Glass-to-metal and ceramic-to-metal seals provide the physical barrier necessary to maintain the pressure differential between the inside and outside of the enclosure. These materials are selected because their thermal expansion coefficients match the metallic shell, preventing crack formation during thermal cycling. When a hermetic feedthrough is correctly manufactured, it achieves leak rates below ten to the minus eight standard cubic centimeters of helium per second.
Electrical Performance
High-power applications require feedthroughs that can carry hundreds of amperes without generating excessive resistive heat. Copper or nickel pins are typically brazed into the insulating body to achieve low resistance. The insulation must also withstand high voltage spikes without electrical breakdown occurring.
Procurement Priority
Battery packaging engineers specify these components based on environmental ratings and chemical resistance to electrolyte vapors. Selecting the wrong feedthrough can lead to moisture ingress, which degrades the lithium salt and creates corrosive hydrofluoric acid. This selection directly affects the long-term safety of the energy storage system.
