Meaning
Ratio of the pressure drop to the volume flow rate in a fluid delivery system. Hydraulic impedance provides a measure of the total resistance encountered by a liquid as it moves through pipes, valves, pumps and mixers. It provides the fluidic equivalent of electrical resistance in a circuit.
Frequency Response
Dynamic changes in flow rate reveal how the system reacts to sudden starts and stops. Because hydraulic impedance includes the effects of fluid inertia and the elasticity of the hoses, it determines the settling time after a valve closes. Stiff piping reduces the impedance and allows for sharper transitions in the dispense cycle.
High frequency oscillations in the pump speed can lead to resonance if the impedance is not properly matched to the material properties.
System Calibration
Calculating the expected pressure for a given material viscosity helps in identifying hardware faults. High hydraulic impedance indicates that the internal passages are too narrow or that the material is too thick for the current setup. Adjusting the temperature of the fluid is a common way to lower this value.
Design Constraint
Engineering a dispensing line for battery slurries requires balancing the pipe diameter against the desired cycle time. Low hydraulic impedance allows for faster filling of cells but might require larger valves. Every component from the bulk reservoir to the final tip contributes to the total value.
