Meaning
Structural metallic enclosure produced by forcing heated metal through a shaped die provides both mechanical protection and integrated cooling pathways for battery modules. This protective enclosure is an extruded aluminum housing, and it is widely used in electric vehicle battery packs to combine structural rigidity with lightweight thermal management. The extrusion process allows complex profiles, such as hollow channels for liquid coolant, to be integrated directly into the walls of the module.
This integration reduces the total part count and simplifies the assembly process.
Mechanical Strength
High strength alloys are utilized to create a rigid frame that shields sensitive battery cells from external crash forces. The extrusion process aligns the grain structure of the metal along the length of the profile, which increases the impact resistance and tensile strength. This structural integrity is critical for passing the rigorous vehicle crash tests required by safety regulators.
The housing prevents deformation and subsequent short circuits within the cells during a collision.
Thermal Management
Integrating cooling channels directly into the metal walls allows for highly efficient heat dissipation from the battery cells. Liquid coolant flows through these extruded passages, absorbing heat from the modules and carrying it away to the vehicle radiator. This direct cooling mechanism eliminates the need for separate, bulky cooling plates and thermal interface sheets.
The resulting assembly is more compact and has a lower overall thermal resistance.
Manufacturing Efficiency
Producing enclosures through extrusion allows for high dimensional accuracy and low waste when compared to casting or machining. The profiles can be cut to any required length and machined to accept end caps and electrical connectors. This flexibility allows manufacturers to scale the module size for different vehicle configurations without redesigning the tooling.
The process provides a cost effective solution for high volume automotive manufacturing.
