Meaning
Flexible aluminum-laminate pouches contain the active materials, separator, and liquid electrolyte of lithium-ion cells. The pouch cell enclosure provides a lightweight alternative to rigid metallic cans, reducing the inactive weight of the battery pack and increasing energy density.
Barrier Technology
The laminated film consists of multiple polymer layers surrounding a central aluminum foil core that acts as a moisture barrier. To prevent electrolyte leakage, the outer pouch cell enclosure is heat-sealed along the edges where the copper and aluminum terminal tabs extend outward. These seals must prevent moisture from entering the cell over its entire operating life.
This is critical because water reacting with the lithium salt produces corrosive hydrofluoric acid.
Mechanical Vulnerability
Because the flexible pouch has no inherent structural rigidity, it is vulnerable to puncture by external objects or internal debris. Swelling can stress the sealed seams, potentially leading to leaks or delamination of the active layers. External compression plates are required to support the pouch during cycling.
Packaging Integration
Sourcing teams prioritize the selection of high-quality laminate films that offer a balance of chemical resistance and seal strength. It ensures that the cell remains hermetically sealed through thousands of thermal and mechanical cycles.
