Meaning
Elastomeric materials with a cellular structure provide both mechanical support and thermal separation between individual battery cells. A silicone foam pad acts as a spring to maintain pressure within a module while allowing for the natural expansion of the cells during charging and discharging. The resilience of the material ensures that the internal components remain securely positioned even under heavy vibration.
Material Compression
The ability to return to its original shape after being squeezed is the defining feature of these components. Pressure deflection force determines the selection of a silicone foam pad to match the specific needs of the cell chemistry. This pressure helps maintain electrical contact and prevents the swelling of pouch cells from causing structural damage to the enclosure.
Thermal Management
Low thermal conductivity makes these pads effective barriers against heat transfer between adjacent cells. If one cell experiences a temperature spike, the silicone foam pad slows the progression of heat to its neighbors. This delay provides the bms with extra time to detect the issue and initiate safety protocols.
Vibration Damping
Road shock and industrial vibrations can fatigue the electrical connections inside a pack. The soft structure of a silicone foam pad absorbs this energy and protects the sensitive busbar welds and sensing wires. This mechanical protection extends the service life of the battery system in harsh environments.
