Meaning
A continuous bonded joint that provides both mechanical load transfer and high thermal conductivity connects battery cells to the liquid cooling system. This structural thermal seam eliminates the need for separate mechanical brackets and thermal pads, reducing the weight and complexity of the module.
Adhesive Performance
Dual-function adhesives must withstand the mechanical stresses of vibration and cell expansion while maintaining a continuous thermal pathway. The seam must resist shear and tensile forces to prevent the cells from detaching from the cooling plate. This mechanical strength must be maintained across a wide operating temperature range without becoming brittle or losing adhesion.
Sourcing contracts specify the minimum peel and shear strength required after accelerated environmental aging, protecting the vehicle from long-term fatigue failures.
Thermal Interface
Heat transfer through the seam depends on the thermal conductivity of the adhesive and the thickness of the joint. The adhesive must be formulated with conductive fillers, such as alumina or aluminum nitride, to achieve the required heat transfer rate. These fillers increase the viscosity of the material, making it more challenging to dispense during assembly.
Sourcing teams must evaluate the trade-off between thermal performance and manufacturing cycle time to avoid production bottlenecks.
Process Sourcing
Automated dispensing equipment is required to apply the adhesive with high precision to ensure complete coverage and prevent air pockets. The supplier’s capability to control the seam thickness is a major factor in the sourcing evaluation. Sourcing managers must assess the reliability of the supplier’s dispensing process and their quality control measures.
Such assessment ensures the thermal and mechanical performance of the assembled modules is highly repeatable.
