Meaning
Mandatory safety procedure for shipping batteries replicates the low pressure conditions of an aircraft cargo hold to ensure the structural integrity of the cell casing. The t.1 altitude simulation involves placing the units in a vacuum chamber for at least six hours at a pressure equivalent to an altitude of fifteen thousand meters. This test verifies that the seals and vents of the battery can withstand the internal pressure expansion that occurs when the external air becomes thin.
It is a pass or fail requirement that must be completed before any lithium product is cleared for air transport.
Pressure Variation
Expansion of the internal gases puts a significant mechanical load on the weakest points of the battery housing. During the t.1 altitude simulation, the difference between the high internal pressure and the low external pressure tests the quality of the welds and the elasticity of the gaskets. If the seals are not perfect, the electrolyte may leak out or the casing may deform.
This is especially important for pouch cells which have no rigid exterior to contain the swelling.
Mechanical Integrity
Maintaining the physical shape of the battery ensures that the internal components remain in their correct positions. A failure in the t.1 altitude simulation often manifests as a visible swelling or a rupture of the outer skin. Any loss of mass during the test indicates a leak, which results in an immediate rejection of the product batch.
The test is performed at room temperature to isolate the effects of pressure from those of thermal stress.
Logistics Compliance
Documentation of a successful test is required for every battery model designation before it can be legally shipped. Cargo carriers and airlines check these records to confirm that the batteries will not fail during a flight. This safety measure prevents the release of flammable electrolyte vapors into the aircraft cabin or cargo bay.
By passing this standard, manufacturers prove that their products are robust enough for global distribution. Compliance with this international testing manual is a non negotiable part of the supply chain process.
