Meaning
Physical material parameters defining the rate of heat energy transmission through the volume of a cell determine the design of thermal management systems. Sourcing teams analyze this bulk thermal conductivity to predict how rapidly a cell transfers heat from its internal winding core to its outer casing. This property is measured in watts per meter kelvin and varies according to the directional orientation of the active materials.
The evaluation stops applying when the cell undergoes active thermal runaway, where rapid internal chemical reactions overpower normal heat transfer mechanisms.
Heat Dissipation
Heat must move quickly from the electrodes to the cooling plate to prevent localized temperature spikes. This bulk thermal conductivity determines the internal temperature gradient during continuous discharge cycles. Cell formats with low internal heat transmission require more complex, expensive active cooling systems to maintain a uniform temperature distribution.
Sourcing engineers prioritize cell geometries with high heat transmission rates to minimize pack weight and reduce the total cost of the thermal assembly.
Temperature Measurement
Measuring the rate of heat flow across the cell geometry requires specialized laboratory instruments such as steady state guarded hot plate systems. This bulk thermal conductivity is highly anisotropic in lithium cells, being up to thirty times higher along the electrode planes than it is across the layered active materials. Testing protocols must account for this directional difference to avoid underestimating the peak internal temperatures during high power operation.
Physical pressure applied during the measurement must replicate the compression found in an assembled module, as tighter physical contact increases the measured heat flow. Accurate directional values prevent the miscalculation of cooling channels during the design of the larger battery enclosure.
System Integration
Battery pack design uses these thermal values to determine the size, thickness and coolant flow rate of the cooling system. This bulk thermal conductivity dictates the maximum thickness a cell can have before its center becomes too hot during high current charging. Sourcing agreements specify minimum conductivity values to guarantee the cell can operate continuously at high discharge rates without exceeding maximum operating temperatures.
This specification protects the buyer against early capacity degradation caused by uneven heating within the pack structure.
