Meaning
Total opposition to the flow of direct current within an electrochemical system measures the combined effect of ionic and electronic barriers. This dc resistance determines the magnitude of the voltage drop that occurs when a load is applied to the battery. It accounts for the conductivity of the electrolyte, the permeability of the separator and the contact resistance at the current collectors.
The value is typically calculated by dividing the change in voltage by the change in current over a specific time interval. It applies to all phases of battery operation and is a primary indicator of the power delivery capability of the cell.
Ion Transfer Impedance
Movement of lithium ions through the various layers of the cell creates a measurable friction that shows up as heat. Higher dc resistance values indicate that the ions are struggling to move through the electrolyte or the solid electrolyte interphase. This impedance increases as the battery gets colder because the viscosity of the liquid electrolyte changes.
Chemical changes over the life of the battery also contribute to a steady rise in the internal opposition. Thickening of the resistive layers on the electrodes slows down the intercalation process and reduces the efficiency of the charge transfer. Engineers use pulse testing to isolate the ionic components from the pure electrical resistance of the metal foils.
The resulting data helps in designing thermal management systems that can handle the waste heat.
Thermal Heat Generation
Energy lost during the discharge process is converted into thermal energy according to the square of the current and the resistance. Excessive dc resistance leads to rapid temperature increases that can damage the separator or accelerate chemical aging. This relationship means that a small increase in resistance has a non linear impact on the cooling requirements of the pack.
High performance applications like electric vehicles require cells with very low resistance to maintain high power output without overheating. Designers must balance the thickness of the active material with the need for low impedance. Reducing the path length for the ions lowers the resistance but also decreases the total energy density.
Measuring the heat signature during a discharge cycle provides a direct way to verify the efficiency of the internal cell design.
Voltage Sag Evaluation
Performance of the battery under load depends on the ability to maintain a stable output voltage. When the dc resistance is too high, the voltage sags immediately when the circuit is closed. This drop can trigger the low voltage cutoff of the device even if the battery has significant energy remaining.
The boundary of acceptable performance is reached when the sag prevents the system from meeting the peak power demand. Manufacturers specify the maximum resistance at different states of charge to help buyers select the right cell for their application. Monitoring these values over time provides an early warning of potential failure before the capacity of the battery significantly declines.
Precise resistance measurements are a requirement for accurate state of power estimations in advanced battery management systems.
