Meaning
International standards define a composite temperature and humidity cyclic test intended to reveal defects in electrical products caused by breathing. The iec 60068-2-38 procedure subjects components to high humidity combined with rapid temperature changes that include sub zero excursions. This test is specifically designed to accelerate the effects of moisture absorption and the freezing of trapped water inside seals or enclosures.
Test Cycle
Multiple stages of heating and cooling are performed over a period of several days. During the iec 60068-2-38 sequence, the temperature alternates between high heat and freezing while the relative humidity is maintained at nearly one hundred percent. This combination forces moisture into any small gaps through a vacuum effect created as the air inside the component cools.
Defect Detection
Failure modes such as insulation breakdown and mechanical swelling are often uncovered during this process. Because iec 60068-2-38 is more aggressive than simple steady state humidity tests, it is better at identifying weaknesses in the gaskets and coatings of a battery pack. Any ingress of moisture that occurs during the warm phase will freeze during the cold phase, potentially cracking the protective materials.
This cycle of expansion and contraction mimics the natural stress of outdoor environments but at a much higher frequency to save time during the development phase.
Certification Role
Automotive and aerospace industries use this standard to validate the environmental resistance of their hardware. Passing the iec 60068-2-38 test provides confidence that the electronics will survive in diverse climates where the humidity is high and the temperature fluctuates daily. This verification is required for ensuring the long term safety of high voltage systems.
