Meaning
Pressure equalization technique allows the controlled escape of trace gases while preventing the entry of external moisture or contaminants. Small amounts of gas generated during normal charging and discharging cycles pass through a semi-permeable membrane. This micro venting prevents the internal pressure from distorting the cell casing or stressing the hermetic seals.
Specialized ePTFE membranes are common choices for this feature because they repel liquid electrolyte.
Membrane Porosity
Hydrophobic materials with sub micron pores facilitate the movement of gas molecules. While the pores are large enough for air and hydrogen, they are too small for liquid water or dust particles. This micro venting action remains consistent throughout the life of the battery.
If the membrane becomes clogged by debris, the pressure relief function is lost.
Electrolyte Retention
Liquid electrolyte must remain inside the cell to maintain the ionic conductivity. The surface energy of the micro venting material prevents the liquid from wetting the pores. This creates a barrier that holds the fluid back even under moderate internal pressure.
Manufacturers test this by applying a liquid head and checking for breakthrough over several weeks.
Environmental Protection
Battery packs used in outdoor environments rely on these vents to handle temperature swings. Without micro venting, the air inside the pack would expand and contract, drawing in humid air through the gaskets. The vent allows the pack to breathe while maintaining an IP67 or IP68 rating.
This balance of airflow and sealing is essential for long term reliability in varying climates. Testing validates that the gas transport through the membrane does not compromise the electrolyte chemistry.
