Meaning
Rectangular packaging style for electrochemical cells offers high energy density and efficient heat dissipation by using flat surfaces that allow for tight packing in large modules. A rigid aluminum or steel case protects the internal electrode stack from mechanical damage and environmental exposure. The prismatic cell format is the preferred choice for many electric vehicle manufacturers and grid storage providers.
It governs the mechanical layout of the battery pack and the design of the cooling plates. The definition applies to any cell where the height and width are significantly larger than the thickness.
Housing Efficiency
Flat sides of the enclosure allow for the cells to be placed directly against each other with very little wasted space. In a system using the prismatic cell format, the energy per unit of volume is typically higher than in systems using cylindrical cells. This compact arrangement makes it easier to fit large batteries into the limited space under a vehicle floor or inside a shipping container.
The rigid case also provides a stable surface for the mounting of sensors and busbars. Within the module, the cells are often held under compression to improve their electrical performance and prevent the internal layers from shifting. This structural stability is a major advantage for heavy duty applications.
Thermal Path
Large surface area of the broad faces provides an ideal contact point for liquid cooling ribbons or cold plates. Because the prismatic cell format has a predictable geometry, engineers can design thermal management systems that provide uniform cooling across the entire cell. This uniformity is necessary for preventing hot spots that can lead to accelerated aging or thermal runaway.
Heat is conducted through the metal case to the cooling system, which then carries it away from the battery pack. This efficient transfer of energy allows the battery to operate at higher power levels for longer periods. Proper thermal design ensures that all cells in a pack stay within a few degrees of each other.
Module Integration
Building a large battery system involves connecting hundreds of individual units into a coordinated electrical network. The terminals on a cell in the prismatic cell format are usually located on the top, making them easy to access for laser welding or bolting. This simplifies the manufacturing process and reduces the time needed for assembly.
The standard sizes of these cells also allow for a more modular approach to design, where the same cell can be used in different products. Manufacturers can scale their production by simply adding more modules to the system. This flexibility helps lower the cost of energy storage by enabling mass production and standardized parts.
