Meaning
Structural assemblies that group multiple individual prismatic cells into a single pre-wired package provide mechanical support and electrical integration for electric vehicles. Inside a prismatic module, the flat cells are arranged side-by-side to optimize the utilization of space. This packaging method simplifies the assembly of larger pack systems.
Mechanical Frame
Anodized aluminum or steel brackets enclose the cells to resist the mechanical expansion that occurs during charging. By exerting a constant compression force, the mechanical frame of the prismatic module prevents swelling and stabilizes the electrode structure. This compression is essential for maintaining electrical contact and prolonging cell life.
Thermal Management
Liquid-cooled plates positioned beneath the cells extract the heat generated during high-power operation. In a prismatic module, the flat surfaces of the cell casings provide a large contact area that facilitates heat transfer to the cooling plate. This thermal design keeps cell temperatures uniform to prevent localized degradation and thermal imbalances.
It also helps avoid the hot spots that can trigger catastrophic thermal events.
Electrical Connection
Laser-welded busbars connect the cell terminals in series or parallel configurations. These busbars in the prismatic module are designed with flexible expansion loops to absorb mechanical vibrations. This electrical configuration must carry high currents while minimizing resistive losses.
