Meaning
Composite aluminum laminate sheeting provides the external packaging for lithium-ion polymer batteries. This material, commonly called pouch cell foil, protects the sensitive electrochemistry of the cell from external atmospheric contamination.
Barrier Integrity
Atmospheric moisture and oxygen react violently with the lithium salts inside the cell. The secondary aluminum layer in pouch cell foil acts as an absolute physical barrier to prevent these gases from penetrating the cell cavity. Microscopic pinholes in this metal barrier can lead to slow moisture ingress over months of operation.
This slow leakage causes swelling and loss of electrochemical performance inside the battery.
Forming Process
Mechanical presses stamp the laminated sheets to create the cavity that holds the cell electrodes. During this forming stage, pouch cell foil must stretch without cracking or delaminating from its protective polymer layers. If the metal foil is too brittle, the outer protective polymer can tear and expose the aluminum to the electrolyte.
This exposure causes corrosion and can lead to eventual pouch failure.
Cell Reliability
Material sourcing managers evaluate foil quality to prevent warranty claims and cell failures. High-quality pouch cell foil ensures that the battery can operate for its intended lifespan without gas buildup or electrolyte leakage. Sourcing agents negotiate specifications for laminate adhesion and foil thickness with specialized suppliers to maintain consistent manufacturing yields.
Using premium packaging materials directly improves the lifetime performance of the battery pack.
