Meaning
Material penetration strength defines the maximum force required to pierce a membrane or film with a probe of specified geometry. In battery design, puncture resistance measures the ability of a separator to withstand penetration by active material particles or lithium dendrites. This metric is measured in Newtons and is determined using standard puncture testing protocols.
It does not measure the tensile or tear strength of the polymer web.
Safety Criticality
High penetration strength prevents localized short circuits between the anode and cathode. If the separator has low puncture resistance, microscopic surface rough spots or dust particles can easily pierce the film during assembly or cycling. This failure results in a rapid self-discharge of the cell.
Dendrite Prevention
Dendrite growth during rapid charging can exert high localized stresses on the separator. A separator with high puncture resistance prevents these metallic branches from piercing through the membrane. This protection is essential for ensuring safety during high-power charging.
Sourcing Specification
Sourcing contracts for battery separators establish minimum puncture force limits to ensure the reliability of the cells. Suppliers must provide batch certificates showing that the puncture resistance meets the design limits. This verification is a key factor in the component qualification workflow.
